Hi all

I am going to let you know about the procedure of the Maths Paper. Basically you need to bring along your stationery and your calculator into your classroom before the exam.

Paper 1 will then be given out and you are to answer everything on the Question Booklet. This paper will last for 1 hour.

About 10 minutes before the end of Paper 1, foolscap papers and Paper 2 will be given to you. You may start your Paper 2 if you have already finished your Paper 1 then.

After 1 hour, Paper 1 will be collected.

Just in case you are wondering when marks will be deducted, it can happen in the following cases:
(a) No units - 1m
(b) > 3 Significant figures (if the question does not specify s.f and your answer happens to be more 4, 5 or more s.f. as it has to do with non-exact asnwers such as those involving the use of pie, then you need to round it off to 3 s.f.; if the answer is in degree and it is a decimal, make sure that you round it off to 0.1 degree) - 1m
(c) Division of 2 columns on foolscap papers (not allowed) - 1m
(d) Use of pencil (not allowed for writing; you can only use a pencil for drawing graphs, statistical diagrams and construction of geometry) - 1m
(e) Premature rounding off, meaning you round off your answers first when the questions ask you to EVALUATE. You will find your answers different because they are no longer accurate. This happens especially for questions involving four operations of real numbers with square root, square, cube root and cube - 1m

Now, hedgehogs are not clever,
No, hedgehogs are quite dim,
And when he sees your headlamps,
Well, it dont occur to him,
That the very wisest thing to do
Is up and run away,
No! he curls up in a stupid ball,
And no doubt starts to prey.

Well, motor cars do travel
At a most alarming rate,
And by lunch time you sees him,
It is very much too late,
And thus he gets a-squasho'd,
Unrecorded but for me,
With me pen and paper,
Sittin' in a tree.

It is statistically proven,
In chapter and in verse,
That in a car and hedgehog fight,
The hedgehog comes off worse,
When whistlin' down your prop shaft,
And bouncin' down your diff,
His coat of nice brown prickles
Is not effect-iff.

A hedgehog cannot make you laugh,
Whistle, dance or sing,
And he ain't much to look at,
And he dont make anything,
and in amongst his prickles,
There's fleas and bugs and that,
But there aint no need to leave him,

Oh spare a thought for hedgehogs,

As you drink your cup of tea,

The Literature examination on Tuesday, 07th October will be 1hr 50 mins instead of a 2hr 10min paper. The total number of questions to be done is 2 instead of 3. Please take note of the changes.

Look at the list of adjectives below. These are used to describe the characters that you may have to analyse.

Answering Essay Questions

1. Read the question carefully. Underline keywords. They are the clues to what is required in your essay. Try to use these keywords in your introduction, conclusion and wherever necessary.

2. Understand what the question is asking.

Example: By referring to specific incidents in the story, explain clearly how the writer portrays Monica as an untrustworthy person.

3. To help you organise your thoughts, jot down points or underline material you want to include in your essay.

4. Be clear and focussed. Use the T,E,A,Q, method in each paragraph

T – State the point in a Topic Sentence

E – Explain or elaborate on your point or give paraphrased evidence

A – Analyse

Q – Quote evidence from the text

T,E,A,Q in each paragraph

· Start each paragraph with a point that answers the question.

· Support your point with a quote / paraphrased evidence from the text.

o Explain or elaborate on how your quote / paraphrased evidence links to the point you have made [its significance].

A common mistake:

Simply narrating incidents / events without linking them to the question

· Your essay must be relevant to what is asked in the question. If you are asked why you sympathize with a character in the story, do not smiply narrate the story. You must explain why each incident caused you to sympathize with the character.

How to avoid this common mistake:

a. In your introduction, include words or phrase[s] from the question so that you are reminded to be focused on what is asked. Indicate clearly how you wish to address the question.

b. The middle paragraphs – Each should be devoted to a point you want to make, supported by the relevant evidence. Where appropriate, use a word / phrase from the question so that you keep on track [not necessarily in every paragraph].

c. A good conclusion is just as important as a good introduction. BRIEFLY summarize the key points. Use a word / phrase from the question, especially if you haven’t done so in the preceding paragraphs. You could also have a short personal response in it.

Notes for literature

• · Make sure you complete the paper on time.
• · If you cannot finish the paper, move on to the next question first.
• · Manage your time well.
• · Do not complete the paper very quickly as it means that you have done very less for the paragraphs.
• · Make sure your paragraphs are of good length because the longer the paragraph without a lot of mistakes, the higher marks you get.
• · Make sure you elaborate well on each point
• · 1 TEAQ should be the length of ½ a foolscap. If you have a paragraph lesser than ½ a foolscap, most likely you will fail.

Here are some helpful notes for paragrah-writing for TEAQ. Edit them for your use - Don't just memorise them. Note that Bongo and Zebra are fictitious poems but the structure of a paragraph can be seen. Average word count for a 5-paragraph TEAQ essay is 150 words each. For 3 TEAQ paragraphs, a good 200 words per paragraph should get you to fill at least one side of a page.
