Chapter 1: An Introduction to History What is history? -the record and study of past human events that have shaped the way the world is today. Why study history? -Understanding change and how our society came to be -Learning from past successes and failures -Understanding and respecting one another -Developing our critical thinking skills Chapter 2: Reconstructing the Past Sources [Primary Sources] -information provided by people who were involved in historical events or who witnessed the events. àWritten evidence àPictorial evidence àOral evidence àArtefacts [Secondary Sources] -records of people who did not directly participate in or witness the events they describe.
Evaluating Evidence [Credibility] -whether the person who provided the evidence is trustworthy. [Consistency] -considering whether the statements have similar meanings. [Corroboration] -to corroborate something that is sad or reported means to provide information to support it.
The Language of Time [Chronology] -the arrangement of past events starting with the event that occurred first. [Timeline] -a sequence of events in chronological order. [BCE/BC] -‘Before Common Era/Before Christ’ [CE] -‘Common Era [Periods] -referring to different times in history is to divide it into periods or different blocks of time. [Circa] -means around, means that we do not know the exact year the event happened but we think it was probably around that time. [Century] -refers to a period of 100 years. [Dynasties] -a line of rulers who belong to the same family OR -refer to the years when a region is continuously ruled by members of the same family.
